At Arriba Group, we recognise the significance of Ramadan for our Muslim employees and are focused on creating an inclusive and supportive workplace. Observed from February 28 to March 31 this year, Ramadan is a time of fasting, prayer, and reflection for many of our team members. As an organisation that values diversity, respect, and employee wellbeing, we ensure that our workplace culture accommodates and supports those observing this sacred month.
We asked two of our colleagues, Depar Din, Head of Data Analytics and Selma Elhelou, Head of Business Partnering, about what Ramadan means to them as well as finding out how employees can create a safe space for their peers during this holy time.
What is Ramadan?
Depar: Ramadan is the 9th month in the Islamic lunar calendar in which Muslims fast the day between sunrise and sunset. It is also a month of worship, self-discipline and reflection – basically to be a better version of yourself.
This year Ramadan is held 28th February through to the 31st of March
What does Ramadan mean to you?
Depar: Ramadan means a time of worship and self-reflection for me. It also means a time to spend time with your family. It is also a time of giving and to think of others that are less fortunate than you. It is my favourite month of the year and I’m excited that we are approaching Ramadan very soon.
Selma: Ramadan is a sacred time of year for the Muslim community. On a personal note, it’s my favourite month of the year.
Why do Muslims fast?
Selma: Muslims fast as an act of worship, self-discipline, and spiritual reflection to instil purity of the mind, body and soul to attain closeness to God.
How do you celebrate?
Depar: I celebrate Ramadan by spending time with my family, spending time at the mosque volunteering and spending time focusing on worship.
Selma: By breaking our fast with family and friends on most nights (traditionally called Iftar). At the end of Ramadan, there is a celebration marking the end of the Holy month, which starts with a family breakfast followed by visiting family and friends throughout the day.
How can we support our team mates who participate in Ramadan?
Depar: By being understanding that they may be a little tired particularly in the beginning of the month. We can also help by allowing them to work from home (where it is possible) so they can catch up a little more on sleep. It will be particularly hard for those of us in Sydney this year due to daylight savings.
Selma: Be mindful of fasting and scheduling social events centred around food. If eating in front of fasting colleagues, be considerate but don’t feel the need to hide it.
We believe that fostering an inclusive and supportive environment benefits everyone. Recognising and respecting Ramadan is part of our broader commitment to valuing diversity and creating a workplace where every employee feels respected and empowered. By offering flexibility, understanding religious commitments, and encouraging open conversations, we ensure that all employees feel supported throughout their journey, both professionally and personally.
